You earn money every day you work. But most jobs only pay you once a week or every two weeks.
That space between when you earn your money and when you get it is called a gap. And that gap is where money stress starts for a lot of people.
Bills don't wait for payday. Rent is due on the first. Your car payment shows up in the middle of the month. Your kid needs new shoes on a Tuesday.
When a bill lands before your paycheck does, you have a timing problem. It's not that you spent too much. It's not that you're bad with money. The timing just doesn't line up.
Most people fill the gap with whatever they can. And whatever they can is usually expensive.
If you overdraft your bank account, the fee is about $35. If you take out a payday loan, you might pay back $115 for every $100 you borrow, just two weeks later. Credit card cash advances charge interest right away. No grace period.
Over a year, these fees add up fast. We're talking hundreds of dollars. All taken out of money you already earned.
A few small changes can help.
Move your bill due dates. Most companies will change your due date if you call and ask. Say you get paid on the 15th. Your power bill is due on the 5th. Call your power company and ask them to move it to the 20th. Problem solved.
Make a list of your bills. Grab a piece of paper. Write down every bill you pay each month and when it's due. Then write down your pay dates. Look for bills that hit right before payday. Those are the ones causing the squeeze.
Save a little buffer. Even $100 set aside can change everything. It won't fix the gap, but it makes it less scary. Try putting $20 into savings every payday. You won't miss it, and it adds up.
Call about your bills. Your phone, internet and cable companies will often lower your bill if you ask. Say you're thinking about switching. A 20-minute phone call can save you $30 a month. That's $360 a year.
Cancel what you don't use. Look at your last two bank statements. Circle every charge that shows up every month. The gym you don't go to. The streaming service you forgot about. Cancel anything you wouldn't sign up for today.
Rain lets you get the money you've already earned before payday. You worked the hours. The money is yours. Rain just gets it to you sooner.
You can move up to half of what you've earned to your bank account. It's free if you can wait one to two days. It costs a small fee if you need it right away.
There's no interest. No credit check. No loan. When payday comes, the amount you took out shows up as one line on your paycheck. That's it.
Rain won't change when your boss pays you. But it can help when the timing doesn't work in your favor.
