Rain's new Cover Me skill helps reduce overdraft fees before they hit

Banks collect about $12 billion a year from overdraft fees, and the people who pay them are usually the ones who can least afford it. You're already short on cash, and then a bank charges you $35 for the privilege.

Rain's earned wage access already solves that problem once it hits. Cover Me, a new AI skill inside Rain’s AI Financial Health Agent, is built to catch it before it becomes a problem at all.

How Cover Me works

Cover Me watches a user's linked bank account in the background using Plaid, tracks spending patterns and recurring bills, and calculates a daily safety threshold based on that history. When it projects a balance will drop below that threshold within the next day, it sends a notification recommending a specific cash-out amount from the employee's EWA balance, enough to bring them back to safety.

The employee approves or dismisses the recommendation with one tap. If Cover Me doesn't see risk coming, it stays quiet. No noise and no unnecessary alerts.

That's the shift. EWA moves from something an employee has to remember to use in a moment of stress, to something that works quietly in the background and only shows up when it's actually needed.

What Cover Me won't do

Worth being upfront about the limits, because your workforce, and your compliance team, will ask. Cover Me:

  • Can't guarantee an employee will never overdraft
  • Only protects one linked bank account per user
  • Can't help if there isn't an EWA balance available to cover the gap
  • Never moves money without the employee's approval first

That last point matters most for anyone evaluating an AI-driven financial tool. Cover Me flags the risk and shows the employee why. The employee makes the final call, every time. Every action is logged for a full audit trail, and Rain's AI runs on a least-privilege data model, meaning it only touches the financial data already shared for EWA and payroll, nothing more.

What it means for your workforce

For employees, Cover Me doesn't feel like a new tool to learn. It feels like a smart alert that saves them a fee they didn't see coming. There's nothing to set up beyond linking an account, no dashboard to check daily, and no action required unless Cover Me actually spots risk.

With Cover Me, the standard instant-transfer fee still applies on a cash-out (Rain skips the one-to-two day free ACH option here on purpose, since waiting two days defeats the point of covering an overdraft that's about to hit tomorrow). Against a $35 bank fee, it's the clear alternative.

What it means for you as the employer

Cover Me doesn't ask anything of you. It runs inside the Rain platform your workforce already uses, with no new implementation, no added cost and no change to how EWA integrates with your payroll today.

What it does add is depth to a program you're already invested in. Rain's pitch to employers has always been about stabilizing income and reducing financial stress at the source. Cover Me extends that from a once-in-a-while emergency tool into something that works in the background all month.

It's also a useful answer for any stakeholder nervous about AI touching employee finances. Cover Me never acts without permission, never sees anything beyond the financial data already shared for EWA, and every recommendation is auditable.
